Lecture 2: Models with Self-Selection
نویسنده
چکیده
3. Suppose attendance a¤ects student scorse on exam and propose to divide your students into two groups: those with high attendance, and those with low attendance. An unmeasured variable, diligence, may a¤ect both attendance and exam scorse. Higher values of diligence lead to higher attendance, and so students in the high attendance category are likely to have higher values of diligence than students in the low attendance group. As a consequence of this, regressing exam scorse on attendance overestimates the inuence of attendance because it gives attendance credit for the inuence of diligence. The problem is the students have chosen their attendance levels, rather than having this level forced upon them as would be the case in a controlled experiment.

This lecture serves as a brief introduction to two rather large topics: multivariate selection response (response when selection is acting on a vector of traits) and fitness surface estimation (what is the nature of selection acting on a vector of traits). These lecture notes are much more detailed that what I will actually cover in my 90 minutes, but are designed to be self-contained for futur...
